What is the law?

All businesses in the UK must fulfill the requirements of British Standard 5306 by ensuring a qualified and competent maintenance provider is employed for the installation and maintenance of firefighting equipment. Fire extinguishers should be commissioned on site by a BAFE certified fire protection company. Regular visual checks should be conducted monthly, and annual servicing by a competent person is necessary. Fire extinguishers should be given an extended service or replaced every 5 years, and CO2 extinguishers every 10 years unless damaged, weight loss, or discharge occurs. It is also a legal requirement to maintain a permanent record of all servicing, maintenance, and inspections of fire extinguishers.

Types of extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are essential safety devices used to suppress and extinguish small fires. They are designed to control fires in their early stages, preventing them from spreading and causing further damage. Fire extinguishers come in different types, each suitable for specific classes of fires. By having fire extinguishers readily available in your premises, you can quickly respond to fire emergencies and potentially save lives and property. It is important to understand the different types of extinguishers and their uses to ensure effective fire suppression. Remember, fire extinguishers should only be used by trained individuals and in situations where it is safe to do so. In case of a large or uncontrollable fire, it is crucial to evacuate the area and contact the appropriate emergency services.

The use of foam extinguishers is being phased for environmental reasons, and therefore should be replaced as soon as reasonable. We can help with the safe disposal of these, as well as suggesting alternatives.

01

Water

Water extinguishers are suitable for Class A fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper, and textiles.

02

Foam

Foam extinguishers are effective against Class A and Class B fires. They create a foam blanket that suppresses the fire and prevents re-ignition.

03

Powder

Powder extinguishers are versatile and can be used on Class A, Class B, and Class C fires. They work by smothering the fire and interrupting the chemical reaction.

04

CO2

CO2 extinguishers are suitable for Class B and Class C fires. They displace oxygen, removing the fire's fuel source and suffocating the flames.

05

Wet Chemical

Wet Chemical extinguishers are designed for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats. They create a cooling effect and form a soapy layer to prevent re-ignition.

06

Fire Blanket

Fire blankets are used to smother small fires or wrap around a person whose clothing is on fire. They are made of fire-resistant materials and can be easily deployed.
